Pierre, the little man Pirre :)

"When we first found Pirre, he was in a terrible condition, with a heavy flea and tick infestation. He was very thin, and he was freezing. His body temperature was below normal. Even in this condition he was a dog of good spirits"

In October several students contacted us regarding a dog roaming around the Large Animal Clinic of our University, outside the city. Caroline and Anouska went out to take a look. He was in a terrible condition. They decided to take him in under our care.

His fur was tangled and covered in dirt and fleas.

It turned out that Pirre also was infected with Babesia. Babesia is a parasite that affects the blood cells, destroying them, causing severe illness. Pirre needed intensive care for nine whole days before he got better.

Pirre finally got better, and turned out to be a great pumi boy.
He is now adopted by our own Caroline and her beautiful family in Norway

After Lucy was found she was kept at the kennels for a while. We knew she was an affectionate, caring dog. But how smart she was, was left for her fostermum, Anne Kathrine, to find out.

Lucy was brought in to foster care with Anne Kathrine one cold evening,
in late winter, 2011. Anne Kathrine decided to adopt her soon after.
Here Lucy is safe and happy in her bed.

Anne Kathrine describes Lucy as a very attentive, smart,
and affectionate dog, who is friendly to all dogs and people.

This poor boy was found yesterday by students near Nyugati railway station in Budapest. He had been observed by several students from whom we received phone-calls and it was obvious he was in great distress. Eventually he was tethered by visiting tourists and our class-mate Nina collected him and took him home for the night.

As is obvious from the photo`s this poor boy is not in good shape at the moment. We will keep everyone updated on his progress.

He may also have an owner so anyone in Budapest, please keep your eyes open for posters etc.

Tammie and her Concrete block

Tammie is our newest arrival to Budadogs and we welcome her with open arms! She is a young, retriever mix, approximately 12 months old, and has lived on a short chain tied to a concrete cylinder ever since she was a young puppy and she has never been off this chain. Despite Tammie`s restricted life she has kept her spirits up and we are glad we could help her before she continued the all too short life which originally was planned for her. Her owner`s intention was to give her to the dog-catcher who would take her to be put to sleep. Tammie was never given a name. She suffered the consequence all too familiar when litters are born in the neighbourhood and was simply tied up as a young puppy and left there day in, day out. Food and water is the extent of her care, her concrete cylinder providing her with shelter from the rain and cold.
Tammie is going into fostering with a wonderful couple who have helped us a great deal, and we look forward to getting to know her better.

Angie became a Budadog today. She was found tied to a chain alone, left to starve to death. The malnourishment and helplessness is more than apparent and I am speechless and appalled.
I surrender myself to the truth in the saying of a picture speaking a thousand words....

Their ability to live in the present is one of the magical aspects of our work. And any time I doubt the purpose or fruitfulness of our endeavours I need only glance into the eyes of a girl like Angie... and it all makes a bit more sense.

She is a quiet, but sweet girl and we can`t wait to help her get her strength and vitality back, teaching her that life can be good and filled with love.

Rescuing Trond

Going to the Large Animal Clinic @ Ullò is always eventful and more often than not, disheartening and sad. By the side of the road one can always see loose dogs in varying states of neglect and the decision to take them or not is always a difficult one to make with several aspects to take into consideration. However, upon seeing "Trond" today there was no doubt in our minds that this was his last shot at life.

Trond was straying at a busy road crossing with trailers and other cars going by at a fast pace. Whenever a car stopped to give way, Trond ran towards it, wagging his tail. One could speculate that he had been taken to this area by car, because his approach to each vehicle was with such excitement and anticipation, looking up at the drivers window as if to say:

"You forgot me didn`t you?..... Have you come back to get me?"

At the time of seeing him Caroline and I were in a minibus with a few of our class-mates on our way back from a farm visit with the obstetrics department and we could see that it was only a matter of very little time (a few hours) before this dog became a lifeless being at the roadside, something one so frequently sees along the busy roads here in Hungary.

We went back to collect Trond in Thea`s car and my heart was pounding all the way. I was seriously worried that we were already too late because this dog seemed to have no regard for the traffic in his frantic search for the car that he was obviously looking for. The one that was coming to take him back home. But as we approached, there he was standing at the side of the road. As our car came to a halt, his ears perked up, his tail started wagging and he immediately trotted up to meet us.

Was this the car that had forgotten him?

It wasn`t. But it was the car that had come to take him home all the same.

Trond`s terrible state became even more apparent as we saw him up close. His body covered in crusts and lesions, his bones visible; he was famished and thirsty and obviously in desperate need of medical treatment which is most likely the reason why he has been placed on the streets in the first place. Upon seeing a dog with this skin-condition it`s important to seek specialist care before anything else. It just so happened that we were driving directly back to campus to attend an elective in Dermatology so Trond received the medical check-up he needed from the dermatologist. Lucy, one of our previous foster-carers, kindly offered to help us by taking him in for a week. Proving yet again that we would be at a total loss without the kindness and help of everyone pulling together for these poor dogs who have done nothing more than be born into an existence and a world where nobody seems to care whether they live or die. The questions we so often are confronted with:

"what, realistically, is another dog? What good will it do when thousands are being abused and neglected as we speak? And why do you care?"

Well today, "another dog" is Trond. And the difference lies in what we can do for him and the heartbeat in his chest and the dignity in his being. And the reason why we care where others might not? Who knows. Maybe we are genetically wired to do so? Maybe we want life to be about something greater and more meaningful than just ourselves? Or maybe it is because we simply cannot find it in us to not care.

NB! We are looking for a fosterhome for Trond and cannot take him to kennels due to his skin condition and the medical treatment he needs for two weeks in the form of baths every second day.
In spite of his physical state, Trond is an extremely sweet natured, loveable and adoring dog. We hope that we can get him better soon and give him the second chance he needs. Trond is a relatively young dog, between 1-3 years old, aprox 20 kg. and is calm indoors, and just a really sweet and friendly young boy. He seems well adjusted and extremely loving and will not be problematic in fostering at all.

Thank you Thea for letting us take him in your car from Ullò to the city and Thank you Lucy for selflessly offering to take him in on only an hours notice. We are very grateful!

Castrations on a Conveyer Belt

A few days ago the Budagirls, Thea and Runa, set out to do some castrations. With the supervision of Viktor, Budadogs' own veterinarian, three of our Budadogs were castrated. Now that all three dogs are fine, and no post operative complications occurred, we feel it is safe to blog about this event. In this way our followers can see some of the work the Budagirls do:)

As a policy, our organisation castrates budadog males in need of castration. We are careful not to castrate new Budadogs "too fast". This especially counts for dogs with behaviour problems such as anxiety aggression, or just timid and more careful males, as there may be a chance of increasing the problem. This theory is yet to be explored completely, and is currently a hot topic in the field of domesticated canine behaviour.

Thea is surgically preparing Paulie. On preparation Thea found only one testicle. This is a relatively normal condition in dogs, and is called cryptorchidism. In crypotorchid dogs the "missing" testicle remains in the abdomen from foetal life. The remaining testicle can cause development of cancer and should always be removed. Cryptorchidism is inherited, and all cryptorchid dogs should be castrated to prevent inheritance of the condition.

A Budadog- day-trip to the kennels that actually went smoothly:)

Finally we're home after a day of minor wrong turns only. In addition to this we also succeeded in NOT forgetting the drugs for the dogs out at the kennels, NOR did we take the wrong dog out from kennels and into foster care. More surprisingly, we even managed NOT to cause any damage to the car :)
(KNOCK ON WOOD!!!)

A couple of times every week some of the girls will take a road trip to the kennels to either collect or deliver dogs, or to give drugs (such as dewormers, spot-ons etc).
The road trips are in fact real roadtrips! The kennels are situated only one hour's drive outside of Budapest, but for certain reasons (...) a Budadog-daytrip is in fact a DAY TRIP!

Ida after arriving to Jenő bácsi's (Uncle Jenö's) kennel. The kennel lies in Monor, which is a village 45km south-east of Budapest. This kennel is what we call the "Dog Hotel", as Jenó spoils the poochies to pieces.

When we opened the dog yard to let Benny out for vaccination the poochies broke loose, and had a little spin around in Jenö's own yard. As usual, when this happens, good hearted Jenö gets some nice, tasty, canned soft-food to lure the doggies back into the dog yard.

Vaccination of Benny - Ida is being "taught" how to do it. Here she is comforting Benny, who is not really happy with the situation of having to be poked and bothered when he was planning on having his five minutes of running around in bácsi's yard.

After poking and annoying Benny, bácsi gladly let him run free a bit before putting him back into the dog yard.

A "few" hours later we're driving home from Feco's kennels in Dunakeszi, a village 20km north of Budapest.
At Feco's we did blood samples and collected dogs that went into fostering today :)

Samuel is visiting

Samuel is an older man with a skin condition, so we have to take him to a specialist next week, this is the reason he is now visiting with me and my two girls for a couple of days.

Here is a photo from when he first arrived to our friend in Heves.

Samuel got a bath yesterday, but still smells like kennel, poor thing, so we need to take him to a hairdresser who can treat his fur and skin gently.

He has walked around the apartment and sniffed everything possible to sniff, and is now content with chewing a bone he found.
It is pretty dark already, so the pictures are not the best, I better take some more tomorrow that we can update his profile on the homepage with.
Samuel is a careful old gentleman, and does not trust everybody he meets, and he makes people feel very good about themselves when he shows you that he trusts you.

He has taken a few breaks in his sniffing to come over to me and lick my hand, before walking around sniffing again :)
Samuel LOVES food! So the food is now on a higher shelf than normal, lucky for me he is too little to even try to jump up on anything, and he seems to lazy and grown up to bother really ;)

Samuel needs a fosterhome really soon and he is also up for adoption :)

Matilda, the strong one

Our newest addition got her name, Matilda, because it means; powerful in battle.

Matilda was rescued by our friend in Heves after she got several phone calls regarding this thin puli who was walking around town begging for food. She got food from the local police station and in front of a warehouse.

When she was rescued she was sitting in the winter wind , shivering like a leaf in the in front of a "Spar" shop. Matilda was not able or willing to move, she seemed like she had given up completely.

Matilda is so skinny, that even through her long fur, you can easily see her spine.
Her fur was in such an awful condition that we had to cut it of at once, we could not let her have all that filth any longer and the fur was so twisted together that it hurt her when she streched her feet.

Matilda seems to be quite young, about 1.5-2 years old. We can not believe that someone has left this sweet, young, trusting girl out in the cold all winter to fend for herself.

Matilda is still in Heves with our friend there, and she tells us that Matilda is so tired that she has hardly moved at all since she took her in. She seems very grateful to be in a safe and warm environment where she gets food served to her and is not something she has to beg for anymore.

She is full of flees at the moment, and Matilda will get a thorough check at the veterenarians office with bloodtests and everything else the veterinarian feels is neccesary.

Matilda will also need an appointment with a very kind hairdresser that we use to get her skin and fur back to normal . She is good with scared dogs, and knows what they need :)

We look forward to get to know her better, and we are sure she will be a joy to know!
Matilda needs a fosterhome with understanding of what she has been through and also ready for when the real Puli shines through, which will happen when she feels more secure :)

Budadogs progress and Donation

This is why we do what we do! Tegwens before and after pictures, she was terrified, but is now on her way to become a confident female. She lives with Anouska now, and will continue to do so for the rest of her life :)

Budadogs has now grown to the point of becoming an official organization, thanks to many wonderful people who have helped so much. We now have lawyers and accountants who are working for us on a non-profit basis which is just amazing. With all this happening we are inspired to work even harder in our effort to save as many lost souls as we possibly can and because we now are official we can finally receive much needed donations! The Budadogs non-profit`s pay-pal account is now up and running and anyone can donate through our website. This is something we are really happy about because we have grown to the point now that in order to expand further, which we obviously wish to do, we need all the financial help we can get.

At the moment we have near 80 dogs in fostering and 70 of them will be going into kenneling for the upcoming holidays which obviously costs a small fortune.

Additionally we strive to help injured and sick dogs in need of medical attention and try to go out of our way to get them the medical assistance they need and deserve.

So please don`t hesitate with donating to help us save as many dogs as we possibly can!

Kaia`s 6 month update :)

Kaia has lived with her adopters Per and Kristine in Norway for 6 months now, so here is a small update :)

Kaia is a happy, fun dog who is well behaved towards everyone and everything she meets, wether it walks on two or four legs. She was a bit reserved in the beginning, but now Kaia is feeling quite at home. She loves playing with her best friend, the Irish Setter neighbor and she also enjoys her daily long walks .

Kaias favourite thing in the world (exept for food) is joining her family up in the mountains, where the x-street dog shows her hunting potential mostly on Norway Lemmings and water Voles (Norwegian: Lemmen og Jordrotter) which she loves to chase!

Kaia`s new family loves her very much and enjoys every day with her. We look forward to more updates :)

Today I can finally write about some progress!

09.00 May Helen and I met with a guy who works in the zoo and has lots of experience with sedating wild animals, and dogs. He had an assistant with him as well. His tool was a blowgun/blow pipe where he had a syringe with the sedative in it.

The pack was not in their usual site so we went in to the little forest where I have seen them before. They where not there....

May Helen and I took a walk to the other side of the forest where Hanne and I spotted the young male on wednesday, but no luck there either. My mood was defenitly not the best when I had to call Anouska and Viktor(the veterinarian and translater) to say that I would have to tell the guy to go back home.
When I walked back to the car the assistant showed me in sign "language" that they had darted the young female! I was so happy I started crying :):) and the whole pack was there all calm like nothing had happened.

We waited 5 minuts for the sedative to take effect, and then "G.I Joe"(the zoo guy) told me to whistle for the young male and give him some food so he would come close enough to hit him with the dart. The young male came trotting towards me and was only 2 meters away from "G.I Joe" when he got the dart in his behind. He started screaming and ran into the forest, and the older male and female followed him.

I ran after them, because it was very important that we found him before he was totally sedated, and became very difficult to find, while the rest carried the young female into the car.

I found him sleeping far into the forest, and the two older dogs where long gone. "G.I Joe" and May Helen brought the cars to where I was and we carried the male into the car and drove off to Viktor the vet.

Toby and Pheobe as I have named them got Vaccination against pretty much everything, including rabies, they got blood tested, de-wormed, treated against ticks and lice, micro chipped, got collars on and also a shot against Babesia, since they where crawling of ticks!

We drove them to the kennel where Toby was settled in with a female and Phoebe got her own room with lots of cosy blankets.

Me and Anouska are going there tomorrow to check on them and to bring Imelda`s puppies to the veterinarian to get their shots and to bring them out to the dog hotel :)

Sorry to say that this is another metro pack update without any new pictures, but I will definitely try to take some next time, when we take the "mom" and "dad" of the pack away from the site :)

We have been following the metro pack closely even though I have not been blogging too much about it.

Last week me and Hanne went out there to try to catch them, since they trust me alot we were a bit over confident and believed we would be able to at least catch 3 out of 4 dogs. There where several (7-9) people walking by while we where there. Some to yell at us for feeding them, "We have tried everything to get rid of the dogs", no wonder the dogs are limping from time to time. Other gave us the "thumbs up" and was happy that we wanted to save the dogs.

The result was that we could not catch any of the dogs, because they got scared and ran into the forest when a lady from the village came over and yelled at us, they have obviously not nice memories from earlier meetings with her.

Bad news: We thought the young female was pregnant.

Hanne has been there 3 times since last week and they have behaved like they have always done, running towards her when she whistled.

Today we went back to catch the young female only, because of our pregnancy suspicions. When we saw her we were amazed at how huge she is! And I am afraid she will give birth before we can catch them.

They where very spooked today, and we had to give up after a couple of hours. I do not know if it is the villagers that have scared them with something or if they are so stressed because of the young one being so close to giving birth, but we decided to hire a man from Budapest zoo to bring his dart-gun (if that is what it is called) and sedate them. This will be much less stressful and we can hopefully get the young female to the veterinarian and get her sterilized before it is too late. The zoo-man will help us this Friday.

After we catch the dogs (hopefully all, most likely 1 or 2 in the first try) we bring them to the vet and give them everything they need, then we take them to a kennel we use where the guy who runs it is very good with dogs and we are really looking forward to see how they behave in their new surroundings. Zsanett that we work with have done this many times before and she is confident in our metro pack, and so am I :)

Darcy the white!

Yesterday Amanda was walking in the Buda hills close to where Hendrik had been found and came across another lone dog. He had been hanging around some school children on a field-trip for several hours, and appeared lost, also he had a wound on his side which appeared to need medical attention.

Darcy was immediately very friendly happily allowing a leash to be put on and walking calmly along side Amanda and her own dog Winston. After about an hour of asking if anyone had been seen searching for a dog, and asking at the cafe Amanda contacted Budadogs to see if we could help him. We told her to take him to Viktor, our vet to check for a chip, but since none was found we had him chipped / vaccinated / de-wormed and treated against ticks and have placed him in kenneling where he can receive treatment for his wound.

We believe that Darcy may have been abandoned by owners unable to pay vets bills related to his wound, since he is clearly used to being handled, and even jumped into the car as soon as the door was opened, but we can not be sure. He is around 2 to 3 years old and 25 kilos.

We will now advertise him on a lost pets website just in case his owners are searching for him and if not will look for a new home for this beautiful boy.

Henrik from budda hills

Amanda saw a dog that seemed lost about a week ago, and asked a "cafè" owner (he sells Langos) if he had seen the dog before. The salesman said he has been feeding the dog for over a month, and has never seen any sign of an owner and that he is walking around the shops all day long looking for food.

Today me and Amanda went to Normafa in Budda hills to take a look at the dog, and to take him to the veterinarian to check for a chip and hopefully an owner. He was scared of people, and the photos I managed to take was while Amanda fed him dryfood, after this he realized that we wanted to put a lead on him, and he was not too keen on it and walked away.

I got some hamburger from one of the little shops and had to jump him, grab him behind the ears and hold on! He was terrified, but I just had to think that it is better to scare him for 20 min then to loose him, and know that he will be homeless all winter. Amanda muzzled him and we got him into a crate in the car and down to Viktor (our veterinarian). There was no chip (as expected), he is about 35-40kg, 2-3 years old and very kind, calm and trusting even after what we put him trough. Henrik, as his new name is, got a chip, vaccinations, spot-on (against ticks, flees and other bugs) and dewormers.

Amanda and me drove him out to the doghotel where he met Dougal (Dougal is such a different and confident boy now!) and John (which Jani baci, the "hotel" owner, adores!). Henrik seemed to feel at home right away, walking around, sniffing the other dogs :)

To bad it got too dark to take any more photos, bacause as you can imagine it was kind of hard taking photos during the dog-catching :)

Metro pack visit

When I arrived to the pack-site today it has been a while since last time, and I was worried about what shape they where in.
Before they saw me, they where sniffing around for food which I have not seen them do before. At first they barked at me and when I whistled they came running! not just trotting.

The young male is limping, and holding his frontleg high of the ground. But he is wagging his tail at me, nearly jumping up and down by the knowledge that I have food for him.

The two females share the same bowl, and are very happy to get some food.
I see that whoever fed them before, stopped after taking the puppy home (I hope this is the truth, and not only wishfull thinking), so no wonder they are hungry!

Hopefully me and Claire will get them to a safe environment tomorrow or as soon as possible next week.

Dennis came to us after living under the name "Antisedan" in the school clinic for about 5 years (his whole life) as a dog that the students was to practise sticking needles on. He was very patient and kind towards everything and everyone, but after many years he showed signs of being tired of all the poking, sticking and the hospital environment he was living in, day in and day out.

When he first came to his fosterhome, his favourite spot was safely under the desk. He could hardly go out in the streets during the day, because he had never been outside the school gates before.

But he soon go comfy in his new surroundings!

Week 2 he was still nervous, and it took him a while to understand what toys where for. Especially when they looked like him!

Now after a while in fostercare he is learning that the streets are not too bad, even during the day. And he has got some sparks in his eyes, and LOVES to jump the home made indoor agility course ;)

Dennis is up for adoption and we are looking forward to see how he is going to get better and better by the day in his fosterhome environment! :)

Kingsley in his new home

Kingsley is a pug who was smuggled illegally to Norway and was ment to be put down since he was too young to be in quarantine for a longer period of time, but we flew him back to Hungary, gave him all the vaccinations and tests needed to be brought in to Norway legally and he has now been adopted to a young couple in Norway.

Kingsley lives in northern Norway and arrived in september to his new "Mom" and "dad", I went to visit them this week, and he is as happy as a pug can be, running around showing off his new home.

Kingsley is attending a socialization class once a week, where dogs meet and greet, get positive experiences with the (sometimes) scary agility obsticles and other scary things, in controlled and safe surroundings. His owner Astrid says that Kingsley is fearless in the agility course, and he loves it!

Astrid and Tom Vidar tells me how easy and calm he is around other dogs when they are out for walks, how he always comes when called and how lovable he is.

When the first snow arrived this week, Kingsley went completely crazy! digging his head under the snow, absolutely loving it :)

Today is my busy day, so I will make it very easy on myself, and give you the e-mail Amanda kindly sent me after she was done feeding and keeping an eye on them yesterday.

First I want to tell you some (hopefully) good news, but we can not be sure. The puppy is gone from its burrow, and is not with the adults. He has not been with the pack for 2-3 days now, and is most likely picked up by someone. My hope is that whoever was/is feeding the pack has taken him home with them, and maybe they where just waiting for him to get old enough, which he is by this point.

Well, here is Amanda`s update :)

"When I arrived all 4 dogs ran off, so I filled the water bowl and put food out for them. When I left I saw them on the other side of the road, so I stopped to watch from a distance to see what they would do. As long as I stayed in the car they were relaxed and lay sunbathing for a while.

After some time they went into the woods, and I got out of the car to have a better look at where they were going. To my surprise the 2 girls (I think it was the girls, the smaller black one and the brown and white one) hearing the rustle of the bag of treats I was holding came back towards me. I fed them treats, and the black one became brave enough to eat from my hand and lie down close to me. The other girl didn't take them from my hand but came very close. I had a bowl in the car so I gave them some water which they took before trotting back home when the treats ran out.

I went back to the site and before long the boys came back. The boys were still wary of me, but the girls didn't mind me being there at all. No sign of the puppy still - let's hope he is somewhere good."

Quick update on our pack. Our friend Amanda went out to the pack today around 18.00 tonight, and they were out on their nightly walk I guess, because Amanda could not see them. Amanda filled the water bowl and left some food for them. I am crossing my fingers and hoping that all of them make it through the night without any more injuries.

Today was a mess! As you might remember, my battery on my camera went dead yesterday, so of course I charged it, but when I arrived at the metro-pack site and wanted to take a photo of the dogs laying in the sun relaxing, the camera said "no SD card inserted"! I forgot it in my computer.. So no photos today, but otherwise the day went on as planned.

For a minute I thought they were all sick and/or poisoned, because they did not react to my whistling or the fact that I was approching them. But when I reached the waterbowl and filled it with 4 liters of fresh water they started to get up on their feet and walk towards me. Everyone exept for the old male of course, but even he does not walk away from me anymore, he just does not seem interested in me at all.

The older female behaved even wierder and more anxious than yesterday, at least for the first 5 minutes. She walked around barking at me and then to the same direction as yesterday.

The young female is more trusting than ever, she lets me stroke her chin and behind her ear while feeding her with the other hand, so it is of course not eniterly her idea of a good time, but she lets me, and I take that as a sign of trust.

The younger male made a huge leap of trust today by eating from my hand, and he kept close to me the entire time, instead of being 2-3 meters away observing.

After the first 5 minutes the old female came close to me and seemed to be more relaxed and ate from my hand, she has not done this in a couple of days, so this is good news! Her teeth looks like they are in a bad condition, and I am wondering if her sight/hearing is getting worse, and that might be the reason for (what appears to me to be) random barking out into nothing.

I did not go to see the puppy today either, but I could see from where I was sitting that he was moving around in his little burrow, fat as usual.

The dogs health seems alright, to be stray dogs. The young female and what is most likely her father is still limping. All the dogs have huge ticks on them all over, and they are so big now that they are starting to fall of them. We are really looking forward to getting them to the veterinarian and check them for pretty much everything.

Today I was pleased with the sight that met me, all of them where laying in the shade. I was nervous that something had happened to them last night when they where gone. So my heart jumped a little when they were all there :)

It is pretty hot outside today, so they had dug themselves a "shelf" to lie on in the sand.

I do not know what the dogs where up to last night after dark, but something has happened, because the young female is limping on her right front leg, but still as trusting as usual. The mother of the pack was not behaving as usual, she was barking at something/someone in the distance every once in a while, and seemed agitated by something. But I sat down and read a magazine ("time out", They have written about having dogs in Hungary and Budadogs is the first organization he mentiones when talking about ways to get/help a dog :) ), and the mother calmed down with the rest of them after a while.

I kept my distance to the puppy today, I did not want to agitate the mother any more than necessary. Here are the last two pictures of the day before my battery went dead, to my great frustration!

A little update:
None of us went out to the pack yesterday due to the pouring rain, but tonight around 7 o`clock I arrived at the site where the pack lives. It was dark, and I could not see any dogs, but the first thing I saw was that the bowl we have left there was filled with water and moved on top of some plastic, which only humans can do :) I filled it with fresh water and left food for them.

I whistled, but the dogs where out wandering I guess, so I went to take a look at the puppy, and outside the burrow I saw more suprises, some kind soul has given them food.

And also laid a jacket out for them.
The puppy was in good shape, growling and barking as usual ;)

I am thinking of putting out a note for the people feeding them. Maybe they know how long they have lived there.

I arrived alone with food and water to the pack around 12 o`clock this morning and the two females came trotting towards me, and the young male was more trusting today than yesterday, and ate some food that was just a meter behind my back. He is the one in the picture below.

The mother of the puppy and the two black young ones seems to be some sort of terrier/german shepard mix and is very beautiful. In this picture she is very close to me, no further than a meter.

These photos are taken outside the burrow where the puppy lives, They follow me everywhere, and the mother is looking closely when I approch the puppy with some food (eventhough the puppy is in no need of any more food, I want the pup to have some human contact).

She is pretty relaxed, laying close to me looking around yawning.

The gorgeous young female below is very curious of this wierd human walking around with food on her hands.

I got the puppy, which I believe to be a female, to lick my hand. But she is very scared of my smell and has most probably never had any human contact.

She eats from my hand, but never let her eyes of mine. She is extremely careful and sweet.

I was there for about 3 hours, and a friend of mine, Ingelin, came after a while, and they accepted her as well.

When I was leaving, the young female followed me, and sat down in a place where she could keep an eye on me.

The mother went to feed her pup when I left.

I got a much closer look at the male today, and he is much older than we thought, because yesterday we wondered if he was the same age as the other two younger ones, but as you see he is an elderly man. We are very interested in checking his leg, and hopefully it is not to bad.

We got an e-mail about a pack of dogs close to a metro stop, so Claire and I went out to check them out and to meet the people who sent us the e-mail. It was almost hard to spot them at a distance, and to see how many dogs there where.

When we got closer 3 of them got very interested and started moving towards the sound of dry food in a bowl we brought with us.

We approched them carefully, with our back to them most of the time, to show them some respect and to not seem too scary.

The fourth dog was limping and kept his distance, but as you can see in this photo, the two females are very curious, while the young boy(most likely brother to the black young female) keeps a safe distance.

The young female(black) eats from my hand after about 10-15 min of patience.

While me and Claire are walking around checking the area, the young boy sees the opportunity to check our pretty pink (Anouska`s) veterinary bag. ;)

When we walked around the place we saw that the dogs had dug burrows in the sand and we went to check it out.

And look what we found!

A young puppy barking and growling from fear in the little burrow. It seemed fat, happy and about 6-7 weeks old. We left it to iself, since we were planning to return anyway. The mother is the black and tan-ish female.

After talking about what we saw, we have decided that we cant leave them there un-kastrated, the older dogs wont survive the winter, and we do not want to separate a pack. So our plan is to return every day with food and patience to gain their trust. We will take the puppy to a fosterhome (he is old enough by then) and thake the rest to our Doghotel so they can be a pack, but in controlled circumstances and we have the chance to socialize them when they have settled down. And after a while (difficult to say how long) when they are ready, we will take them into fosterhomes. First thing to do when we catch them is ofcourse a trip to the vet!

Trolls success

Troll and his owner Josefine participated in their first obedience competition saturday 18th of September. The result was a 4th place and there were 16 competitors, they got 178 points and promoted to class 2 in their first try :) The jugde gave them a 10 for general apperance.

One week later they competed again in LP1, with the same result, but this time they were 4th out of over 20 competitors. So now they are working to compete in LP2

This weekend Troll and Josefine went to a rottweiler meeting and for the second time in Troll`s career he has tried tracking and something called "rundering" in Norwegian, its when the dog finds people that are hiding.

Troll and his owner will join a working-dog course in November and they also do Agility on a regular basis.

Josefine is very happy with Troll and tells us that he is a happy dog who loves all the activities they are doing :)

Alvin the abused

Alvin was found roaming the village with a string of some sort was grown into the skin around his neck. Someone has probably put the string there when he was a puppy and left it there.

Alvin is about 2 years old, and a very happy, loving boy and has a fosterhome through Budadogs now :)

His wound is much better already and does not seem to hinder him at all in being happy and playing with other dogs.

According to the people living in the village he has been walking around there for about a year.

Kaspers new home

Kasper came to his new family in Norway in January 2010, and quickly settled down in his new home.

He loves to be outside in the winter as well as summer, and his new home and garden makes this possible.

He has put on some weight and is now a big boy of 44 kg and growing!
He now eats dogfood instead of shoes ;)

Kasper is not the toughest dog around, but when he has done something once he is never afraid of doing it the again. He was quite scared of kids, and probably had never delt with any, but now he is okay with being around them.

His adopters love him to bits, and is very happy to have Kasper as their companion.

We wish them a long and happy future together, and look forward to more updates :)

The blind Pekingese; Isaac

Our friend from Heves went to her veterinarian with some dogs and cats, when he told her about Isaac.

Isaac`s eye had popped out, so he was taken in for surgery to remove it completely. When the surgery was done they realized that poor Isaac was blind on the one eye he has left.

The owner the left his dog there to be euthanized. But lucky for Isaac the veterinarian did not have the heart to put him to sleep.

He is now going into fostering as a proud member of our Budadog pack, to show the world that he deserves to live even if he is blind :)

Isaac is only 1 year old and is such a loving dog, so we are happy to give him a second chance.

Dog hotel

We have built our own doghotel in a garden outside Budapest, where we pay the couple who owns it to take care of our dogs.
We use the hotel for dogs in need of fostering or if they need some time before he/she is ready to live with people in a fosterhome (very fearful dogs often needs some pack mentality to help them along). We also use it as temporary accomodation during summer, easter and christmas.

We went out to our Dog hotel last weekend, and the dogs love it there! It is so great to see how the dogs rehabilitate eachother in a pack.

Suki, our newest addition, loves to be able to run around with the other puppies, and get much needed social skills from the older dogs. Her and the other dogs enjoys the paddling pools we have left for them for the hot days.

The couple who runs the Budadog hotel are great with our dogs, and they give them walks and let the dogs run loose in the garden a couple of hours each day.

Dougal (above) was with a family, but was still so shy after a couple of weeks that we decided to bring him out to the Doghotel and now he loves to get attention, and has seen the other dogs play and cuddle with people and realized that we are not all that bad :)

Lisa in her new home

Lisa has been in her new home in Norway for a year now, and thriving!
She has buildt some muscles so she is no longer our little stalky girl, but grown into quite the lady :)

Lisa`s "mom" takes Lisa and her companion Tyson out for a hike every day, and they have a fenced-in garden that they can run around in the rest of the day.

Lisa can run around off the leash almost everywhere, and she always comes when called. Her "mom" is so happy with her little Lisa, that she might just get another Budadog some day ;) (we hope)

Lisa`s owner has a studio at home so both Lisa and Tyson comes to work with her every day, and they even get to sleep in her bed, Lisa prefers to lie under the covers with her :)
Her owner tells us that Lisa follows her around constantly, and everyone falls in love with her little Budadog :) she spreads joy wherever she goes!

Tegwen from Illatos

Eve and Maud went to Illatos yesterday to get a German Shepard mix, that we have named Tegwen, out of Illatos kennel. On the illatos website it said that she was a 5 year old female and very shy, her age can`t be much more than 3 years old, but they were right about her being timid. Tegwen (nickname "penguin") hid as best as she could in the small kennel, and crawled along the ground when the worker walked her to the office to get her chipped. But already at the office, Tegwen showed us that she wants to trust people, when she crawled over to the office lady for some attention.

When we got back to Budapest, Anouska, Maud and Tegwen drove out to Monor to check on our Dog hotel there and Tegwen was very curious out in the garden and Maud got some great photos of her strutting around.

Florence has accepted Baby-Maud!

I am so happy to announce that Florence, the female terrier mix who was rescued not long ago with three puppies of which one died, has accepted our little Maud.
Maud was found in a card-board box at Keleti railwaystation some days ago by a Hungarian vet. student who asked us to please take on the little girl. Maud is only 4-5 weeks old and much too young to have been separated from her mother. Our plan after her deworming and vaccination was to introduce her to Florence and her puppies Lou Lou and Jumble. Although these puppies are a few weeks older than Maud and I thought Flo`s milk might have dried out it would still be good for Maud to get the physical contact and crucial social-skill development from the rescued family.

We brought Maud to Amanda`s house yesterday where Florence and the pups have been living in the garden with Amanda`s own two dogs, Winston and her adopted Budadog Moby. At first Florence was not too happy about the little newcomer so Amanda kept them separated and let Maud interact with the puppies and Winston who seems to take surrogacy in his stride. Maud however was craving the maternal attention Flo potentially could offer so with some subtle manipulation Amanda thought she might be able to persuade the young mother. She placed daughter Lou Lou and newcomer Maud wrapped in Florence`s own blanket under her own jumper to mix up all the different smells into one "Happy family scent". Great job on Amanda`s part and it seems Florence still has some milk left over for baby-Maud. The pictures speak a thousand words and we are of course delighted! :))

The Lion and his girl

What I love the most about this work is the before and after. I can`t help but get weepy everytime I recieve a photograph where the dog I once knew looks so different I would never have recognized it on the street. One such case is "Løve" - one of our very first rehomings - and his girl Venja.

Løve came to us from Illatos, chosen specifically by his new family in Norway who saw him on the website. Ironically I named him "Løve" which means Lion in Norwegian and is as far from his character then as one could imagine. He was full of tangled, filthy fur and looked like he had lost the will to live. When we collected Løve he was apathetic - he lay down, refused to move and ignored any attempt at contact. He was too scared to contemplate accepting the love that was offered him. He would, however, gaze up from his lying position and gain eye-contact and he had such a tenderness in his eye - as if to say "just give me some time - I`ll be okey".

Løve went into fostering with Illatos rescue Venja, a sweet, young female with not much dog-dog social skill, but a great love for humans. Together they were the "deaf leading the blind" - Løve loved dogs, Venja loved people. The unlikely duo formed an inseparable bond as as the days and weeks passed they grew stronger in their own ways. Løve decided walking on all four legs without his stomach touching the ground wasn`t so bad afterall and Venja realised other dogs were, infact, a source of some amusement and not only there to poison her day.

Seeing as Løve had a family from the very beginning we were just at the point of advertising Venja when Løve`s family contacted us about getting a dog for their mother-in-law. She wanted a calm, soulful dog to share her life with and really, there was no better match than Venja! So the beautiful story goes that The Lion and his girl flew to Norway together and they could not have asked for a better life. The most striking change is the look in their eyes. No longer the look of fear, bewilderment and hopelessness. Now just a peaceful grace....

New kid on the block - Johnny

Mudi Mix Johnny has been left to fend for himself in a village a few hours from Budapest. His hips are abit wonky so we will x-ray them but first we must get him cleaned up and into a fosterhome.

Johnny is aprox 5-6 months old. Unfortunately there is a trend to throw dogs out onto the streets if there is anything wrong with them rather than get them the necessary veterinary care. Thankfully Johnny needn`t worry now :)

Lonely Ulrik needs a fosterhome

poor Ulrik was going to be euthanised when his elderly owner died so we said we would take him on. He was kenneled but escaped and ran many miles back to his old, empty house looking for his owner.

Ulrik is in kennels at the moment and needs fostering. He is extremely sweet, well behaved and devoted. He is a black, middle-aged dachshund mix. Anyone looking for some calm, quiet company for exam period ?

Two lovely but sad boys need fostering

Louis (bottom) and Dio (top) are our newest arrivals and currently at kennels. Both dogs were abandoned and Louis had a collar which had grown into the flesh of his neck.

Louis story as described by his rescuer:
The dog has stayed at a factory site just outside of my town for a week. The women who is the secretary of the manager of the company called me and asked for my help. I went to see him yesterday but he was too scared to catch him without any forcement so I decided to go back every day specially when the company is closed so there are no people around to feed him. I went back this evening again to spend some time with him and trying to make friends. It went quite well, I could even stoke him so I decided to set off and leave but Louis started following my car. I stopped 3 times and tried to catch him but he was too scared to let himself cought. I thought I would set off very fas so he would not be able to follow but I was wrong. He started running after my car like hell and I had to stop at a point because there were cars coming on the road and it was very dark so Louis must have been hit by a car if I don't stop. So all together it took me 2 hours to catch him but I did it finally. It was almost 10.00 p.m. Right now he is staying in a traveling crate in the kitchen of my sister but I have no idea where I will put him. We are full of dogs

Dio is a foxterrier mix. He was found abandoned and taken to a kennel but escaped twice and was not safe. Now he is in our kennels and waiting for a fosterhome.

Both boys are really sweet.

Newcomer: Amazing Ava

One of our newcomers from the University clinic is beautiful Ava. She is one of the three dogs we took from the obstetrics department. They are shelter dogs that we said we could re-home rather than return to the shelter from where they came. Ava has gone into fostering and is a soft-tempered, lovely young girl. Aprox 1 year old and 15 kg :) She is for adoption.

New Budadogs - stray mum and puppies

Last week one of our adopters who lives in the countryside contacted us about a stray female she has seen often now having given birth. Mum was very protective of her babies so we decided the best option was to feed her on sight until she allowed someone to come closer. A few days later one of her pups got trapped under a log and had to be rescued by our friend. The day after the pup was stuck again. Having been in physical contact with mum and pup she decided it was safe to relocate them to her own garden.

Mum and pups are fine but mum has discarded one of the pups which is now being hand-reared.

Mum is a small black mix, aprox 2-3 years old. Pups are aprox 3 weeks old. When they are old enough we are looking for someone to adopt/foster them and mum will also need fostering. I will keep you updated on their development on the blog :)

New dogs from University clinic!

Before the weekend we were asked to take a poodle mix female we have named Tokyo (bottom picture). She is from a shelter and has been taken to the clinic for Obstetrics surgery practice. She was supposed to be returned to the shelter but instead the vets at the clinic were wondering if we could take her. We said yes and when we arrived to collect her we were shown 7 other females in the same situation. At the moment we have almost 70 dogs in fostering so I said I`d take a look at them and maybe take 2 or 3 but big fat softie that I am I couldn`t bare sending them back to the shelter so I said we would take them all. SOOO we are looking for fostering for all these darling girls.

There`s a Small, happy outgoing poodle mix (Tokyo) and a lovely german pointer mix, a black lab mix, a lean gun-dog mix, a bassett mix, a sheperd mix, a small fox terrier mix, and a small brown mix. They are all really lovely girls, poor things.

Currently they are being kept in cages in one of the older uni buildings and will be ready for fostering in about 2 weeks.

Emil is a 1-2 year old cuddly little short-legged mix. (The darker of the two in the photo`s) He is affectionate and loves to snuggle and also gets on great with other dogs :) He was rescued before christmas by our friend Z who got a phone call from the police regarding 5 strays running dangerously close to a busy road. She travelled there in the middle of the night on her own and managed to rescue all 5 of them! Emil hates the kennels and really needs a nice loving fosterhome now because he just loves human company!

The tough times

I must admit, I like writing and talking about the good stuff. The happy endings and sunshine stories because they are, I believe, what counts in the end. But doing what we do it only feels right that we also tell the sad stories. The ones that hurt us and leave us angry and crying in what feels like a void of hopelesness. We might not tell the stories in the most graphic terms, but sugar-coated just enough so that it is possible to swallow for those who might not necessarily want to naively rescue the canine world one doomed dog at the time, but still want to know what actually goes on in this sick and twisted world of animal cruelty. Because all the beautiful dogs on this blog; the shiny photo`s of blissfull canines on their soft and pastell cushions and all our doggies in the wonderful fostering and adoptive homes out there - they are all a result of the bad stuff... and a result of the sick and twisted.

Last week was a sad week. The type that comes around every so often without warning and just turns everything into sadness, hopelesness and an unwillingness to believe that anything can ever truly change...

We recieved an email from Z regarding a small dog and two tiny puppies that had been thrown out of a passing car into the ditch about two hours outside Budapest.
The organisation we cooperate with is several hours from the site and could not go to collect them that evening. They contacted the local shelter in the area and asked if they were willing to go and collect the poor souls, but they, for some reason, would not....
The day after Z went to collect the dogs. she drove for 1.5 hour and arrived at noon to the area where they had last been observed. And there was a dog, sure enough. But it was only the female - the puppies were nowhere to be seen. Only the female was not happy to see her rescuer, nor shying away at the aproach of someone unknown. She did not have to be coaxed with soft words or tempted with treats... She was lying on the ground, lifeless, gasping for breath with a bullet-hole through her abdomen...

Z rushed her to the vet who performed emergency surgery but the bullet had lacerated her spleen and liver and the poor, darling little girl died that same day....

Who can deliver such cruelty? Who takes it upon themselves to end a life in such a way? Who shoots a lactating, homeless and frightened female - not mercifully in the head but in the belly - leaving her bleeding and gasping for breath... and then walks off? With a smirk? Or in anger? Yes, people suffer. I am not naive. And they take it out on eachother. Their spouses. Their children. Their friends, their community and themselves. There is so much suffering in the world. So much torment. And at the bottom of all of this are our animal companions. Blissfully unaware of the pain this world experiences and always there to take the blow whenever someone feels like delivering one.

We have a new addition to the "pack" - 6 week old caucasian ovcharka female Isobel (her official name. Her nickname is "Sonny" due to her obvious feminine and lady-like characteristics).

Isobel was rescued by medicine student Lucia on one of budapest`s Islands. We look forward to seeing how this "little" girl evolves and what kind of destruction she brings with her as she grows--- and grows--- and grows... :)

Puglet all grown up!?

Kingsley - the artist formerly known as J.D. is growing fast. Not long ago he was a skinny little Smugle Puglet, illegally smuggled into Norway from Hungary and only days from being put to sleep by the norwegian authorities due import rules. He arrived back in Budapest with Ditt Dyr magazine`s Lily kalvø, non the wiser really, happy to have a warm lap and someone to cover with wet little Puglet kisses. Now in the loving arms of fostermum Christine he is growing into something of a gentleman it seems :)

"Kingsley may be quite the little man in the house but is not shy about his overpowering personality! He's growing at a very steady rate, getting bigger by the day. He enjoys playing with my dogs, with dogs at the park, and also alone - he can entertain himself for hours! Kingsley is such a smart puppy - learning commands very quickly and within hours with a lot of hard work and repetition. Right now he answers very quickly to his name, and can sit, high-five, fetch, and speak on command. He sits nicely for treats after coming in for a walk and understands that he is not supposed to jump up when he receives his treat. He does very well on a leash when he is by himself but gets a bit playful when he is in a group of dogs walking with him. :) He is nearly house-trained, and will oftentimes use puppy pads while he is inside the home or left alone. Kingsley is a very alert, inquisitive, courageous, and an incredibly adorable guy! (Not to mention that he is quite the trouble-maker when he steals shoes & socks and runs when he is caught!) He has won over the hearts of many people, and would easily adapt into any home."

Finally Bobby got a fosterhome :)

Many dogs have gone into fostering and Bobby is very happy after his turbulent affair at kennels. He ran away before christmas and we finally located him at a Hungarian couple who refused to give him up. After agreeing that they were, infact, a suitable home for Bobby we let them keep him. 3 weeks later we were contacted and told that Bobby was not going to be a part of their family after all and if we did not take him back they would give him to a shelter. Obviously we told them to give him back straight away - and back to kennel it was for poor Bobby. Now, however, he has go a great trio of fosterparents and we (and Bobby I am sure) are delighted!:)

Lexi is a female viszla/lab mix who has been living in horrible conditions. Her owner died and the police were going to have her euthanized but we have agreed to take her on and she will be arriving on saturday. Dispite of having had such a sad existence in her little shed, she is apparantly a really lovely, tender girl who loves cuddles. We need a fosterhome for Lexi. The new semester has rolled into its second week and we have so many lovely new dogs for the upcoming semester. Today Betty and Dorothy went into their respective fosterhomes.

We have recieved a new dog from Ullò - a massive german sheperd male we named Axel. He is a force to be reckoned with but totally sweet and we hope some "stand-up-guy" is interested in giving him the new chance he so obviously needs. (He`s the kind of dog you just know belongs to a man).

We also have new arrivals Lita and Luna who will be brought to us shortly. The two females were poisoned with rat-poison after spending several years living near a factory and were found and nursed back to health by our friends in Heves. I agreed to pay for their treatment and take them on once they recovered. It was touch and go for poor Luna for a while, but she has now recovered completely and both dogs need fosterhomes. They are really charming, grateful girls.

Rosie has been rehomed to a lovely lady in Norway and will be travelling shortly. Her fostermums have taken on their second fosterdog who we aptly nick-named "Teppe" ("blanket" in English - due to his uncanny resemblance to one). Fostermums have now given him a "proper" name - Ralphie.
New short-leg arrival Pedro has also gone into fostering. He was found chained to a tree for no apparant reason and with no owners in sight and according to people in the area he had been there for a very very very long time. He has the coolest disposition imaginable - so loving and happy!

Tomorrow Caroline is flying to Norway with Brutus and Scout where loving new families await them. Brutus`familiy has been patient and waited for several months after choosing him early on so we are very happy they finally are able to welcome their new member into their home.
Scout has been rehomed to Bergen and its beautiful countryside which he will be sharing with 2 cats and a german sheperd boy - and his new dad :)

Dogs come into our care for many different reasons. Our newest additions are Alex and Adam, plus Bobby is back after abit of a bothersome process.

Alex is from the kennels where we board our dogs for holidays etc. He was handed in by his owner for boarding months ago and the owner never returned to collect him. Alex is a beautiful, calm german sheperd male, aprox 2 years old.

Adam was found by a Hungarian couple on the motorway and he was almost hit by cars several times. They managed to save him and drove him to our kennels where he is now staying and needs a fosterhome if we do not locate his owners. We don`t know much about him yet - he is a wirehaired young boy, probably 1-2 years old, very skinny but friendly with lots of happy energy :)

Bobby was returned to us after Christmas. His Hungarian adopters who had so desperately wanted to keep him changed their minds quickly when Bobby proved himself an escape-artist (which was the reason he came to them in the first place - he ran away from kennels 2 days after arriving and wandered into their house - so one might say it was a "given") and also abit of a player with the neighbourhood ladies. Bobby is a typical "too smart for his own good sometimes" kinda dog- climbing the 3 m fence at kennels, hanging on to the wires while chewing a hole in the roof and popping through it. Not a task easily completed by any standard!? He is sorely looking for a fosterhome because he obiously will do anything to avoid kenneling. Bobby is quite a big boy. Very happy and loving but we need to channel his energy abit. He`s one of those dogs who has been left to his own devices his entire life and has created an idea in his head about how life should be lived. We just need to persuade him that "teamwork" actually isn`t too bad a concept ;)

Last week I was contacted by the Internal med. department at uni regarding a big female they had found. They were looking for the owner but wondered if we could take her on meantime and if the owner was not found, could we take her permanently. Colm, being a fan of the big doggies, went and collected her and took her home. He named her Mia.
A week or so later the uni told me that they had infact located the owner but they were not interested in getting the dog back, so Mia-the-great is now officially a Budadog. She will remain in fostering with Colm and isn`t she a beauty? :)) With some TLC and a good bath this gentle giant is going to sparkle :)

New Illatos dogs on the block: Rio and Jolene

Scouting through the illatos website I found a female that had been there since November. Her description was "sweet, kissing, sad". Seeing as Catherine had contacted me about fostering a "big, calm female" we thought it was the perfect oportunity to visit the "aromatic street" - illatos ut - and collect the female who Catherine has named "Jolene".

The girls headed off with doggie`s details and in addition to taking Jolene we asked which other dogs time was running out. They presented 3 dogs but we could only take one in addition to Jolene due to regulations so the little man "Rio" came along. He had been at illatos since early November and apparantly he was "unadoptable" due to his manic behaviour whenever someone put a leash on him. This, it seems, was going to be his down-fall.

Rio is a young ish (1-2 years) medium sized Border Collie mix and now that he is in our apartment it is obvious that this is a highly intelligent little man! Rio is going to be a super-dog in the right hands for someone who loves the quick, sharp eagerness of a little sheepdog. All he needs are some boundaries and I think the only reason why he hasn`t let himself be walked on a leash is because he never trusted anyone who has attempted to leash him. This we shall remedy quite swiftly ;)

Jolene is a beautiful, majestic and loving female who also arrived to Illatos in November with a litter of 12 puppies. She is aprox 5 years old and just the sweetest thing.

As mentioned, Jolene already has a fosterhome but we are looking for a fosterhome for Rio.

3 puppies confiscated by the Police in Kristiansand, Norway arrived yesterday from Oslo to us in Budapest with Lily, there are 2 maltese and a pug. We named the female maltese pup Zoè, the male Snowflake and the puglet apropriately - J.D(cuz he looks like him;).

Zoè and J.D are in good form although J.D is underweight for a puglet. They are so young poor babies, between 2 and 3 months old. Snowflake is not well and is undergoing medical treatment. He is only half the size of Zoè and there seems to be a defect with his jaw and possibly airways. We will know more soon, but hopefully it is not serious.

The pups will remain in our care for 6 months, undergoing all the necessary vaccinations and bloodtesting and will be adopted to Norway in a proper fashion. It is such an ordeal that dogsmuglers put these dogs through; to breed and transport them illegally at such a young age. Then the dogs are confiscated by the authorities and put in kennels and the only other option to us taking them is to put them to sleep. It is such a tragedy and so unbelievably heartless of the people involved in this dirty business.

J.D and Snowflake have gone into fostering, but we are still looking for a fosterhome for Zoè. She is an outgoing, happy, beautiful young maltese baby.

Kaia has grown alot and is a beautiful little lady who really needs a home enviroment. She was adopted by a Hungarian who saw her at kennels after boarding his own dog there but for some peculiar reason he has not collected either dog!!(?) So it seems that rather than adopt away a dog it is more likely we will probably gain a dog in his own that he never collected (a german sheperd male- very sweet natured).

Additionally I was contacted by the University small animal clinic last week regarding a year old female german sheperd with chronic diarrhoea whos owner was unable to pay for her treatment. I was asked to take her on and said yes of course, so she will be needing fostering once she is better. As of now I have little information and have not had time to go and see her in the clinic due to exams, but will have more information shortly :)

SO, to sum it all up!

On Monday the 18th 3 new smugle pups will be arriving into our care - a pug and 2 maltese puppies all aprox 3 months old. As previously, they were brought to Norway illegally by Hungarian dogs smugles and were going to be euthanised, but we made the same agreement as last time - Budadogs will take over the responsibility for the puppies in Hungary.

We have fosterhomes for all three, but are looking for someone to take the Puglet from the 18th until the 5th of february (when the new fosterhome can take him). If you would be able to look after the little chap for this period, please let us know :)

Mona is a 4 year old female Kuvasz who was rescued in december. She is an extremely sweet, calm and soulful girl who would not hurt a fly. Mona is a quiet, doting, beautiful "gentle giant".

Jenna
Jenna is a female mix, medium size and aprox 2 years old. She is extremely devoted, trainable and loves cuddles. She gets on well with other dogs, but doesn`t like cats.

Dorthe
Alice and Dorthe
Alice is a 1-2 year old small-medium sized (aprox 12 kg) female mix. She is the mother of Oscar and Dorthe. Dorthe is aprox 7 months old and somewhat longer limbed than her mother so far, but same weight (12 kg). It is thought that Dorthe and Oscar`s father might be a yorkie because the neighbour of the garden they were staying in had several yorkshire terriers who ran loose. The 3 dogs were abandoned in a garden in a village 2 hours outside Bp and were left to their own devices for 6 months, being fed by neighbours. Eventually the dog catcher was called to collect and euthanise them but because he had not been payed recently by the government he refused to come. Meanwhile Dorthe ran onto the street and was hit by a car and the dogs were brought to our attention. They were rescued by a local organisation. We took Oscar before christmas, the females were neutered and Dorthe was taken care of medically after her accident which thankfully was not severe. Both females will now be coming to us. They are relatively small in size and very sweet-natured and calm girls :)

Betty
Betty is a funny little female dachshound mix, aprox 1.5 years old. She was found on the cold winter streets with a litter of 6 puppies in a village and taken in by a local organisation in November.

Minnie
Minnie is a 3-4 year old sheperd/lab mix female. She has not had a good start to her life. Although rescued years ago by an organisation there has been no interest in adopting her here in Hungary. She has been staying in a yard area and fed daily, but is in desperate need of some one-on-one contact and love. Minnie is a kind girl, somewhat weary of new situations (quite understandably) and we hope that in fostering she will get the stability she sorely deserves. Minnie is an extremely agile and highly trainable dog. She does not like cats.

Jazz
Jazz is a gorgeous female Siberian Husky mix, aprox 6 months old and weighing in at 19 kg`s. She was named "Sumo" by the organisation who rescued her due to her monstrous size compared to her "littermates"! She was thrown into the yard of a woman who was fostering a small litter at the time, and has grown up with them. Jazz is an outgoing pup and very responsive (ie. trainable!) In the right hands this girl is going to be a little starlet! :)) She doesn`t bark much but howls like a husky :)

Mille
Mille is a 6 month old small beagle mix. She is a very friendly, outgoing and happy little girl who loves other dogs and cats. She was rescued with her sister and brother 3 months ago and has been staying in an open fascility with several dogs and cats. Mille is playful and just a happy-go-lucky type of girl :)

Back to Buda!2010

★Hi everyone and HAPPY NEW YEAR!★

Caroline and I returned to Budapest 03.01 and hectic times continue. We have had 30 dogs in kennels and x amount in care over the holiday season amounting to 48 in total. I would really like to thank everyone who volunteered to take dogs over the vacation! It has truly been a great help and the amount of dogs has been huge with twice as many dogs as last year and we could not have done it without the great help and hard work of our volunteers! A special thanks to Nora who, as always, is a star! She is doing a great job at also finding new homes in Hungary for our dogs and her Hungarian language skills are invaluable! Additionally she has adopted one dog, is fostering one dog and looked after 3 dogs over the holidays!

Now we have quite abit of work ahead of us with taking dogs from kennels and back to their respective fostercarers. The dogs have coped very well. Puppies have been living indoors with the kennel owners familiy and pets. Doggie friends have been staying together in pens and "special-care" doggies, feks Andrè-the-greyhound, has been living in a heated indoor room due to his leg and also his breed being predisposed to hypothermia(someone`s been studying their animal breeding ;p).

Baba travelled to Norway before Christmas and has been staying with Eve. He is going to his new familiy in February. Sebastian finally arrived to his new familiy in December and is living it up on the Norwegian west-coast with his new best friend, Quizz the Ridgeback.

We also have several dogs that are only weeks away from going to their final destinations which is very exciting. :)

All this in mind we still have exams until February 5th so time is of the essence, as usual.

We are looking forward to a prosperous Budadog year with as many rescues as we can possibly manage!

As is probably quite obvious, Exams/Organization-of-doggies-for-holiday-accomodation does not make for good blogging time. So much is happening, so many rehomed dogs, so many new dogs I`d love to share it with everyone here but there are truly not enough hours in the day at the moment for any of us... Caroline has set her well oiled machinery into a gear I didn`t even know existed and has organized 30 dogs into kenneling in two days!!

I really want to thank everyone for a wonderful year with Budadogs! The support and positive attitude of fosterparents and adoptive parents alike has made the project truly come alive and it`s so great that we, together, now manage to make a difference in the lives of so many animals!

The fact that we now focus primarily on dogs in immediate danger of euthanasia has made it even more worthwhile and we have learned and grown so much this past year. Out of 103 dogs rehomed, 5 have been returned which we think is a pretty good percentage of success so far :) It just goes to show how important the fostering program is and how focus on "right owner for right dog" is not to be underestimated.

The Szent Istvan Blood Donor program is recently up and running in the proficient hands of 4th year students Hanne Christiansen and Thea Sibbern Sørensen (please contact them for more information on how you can help the program by your dog or cat donating blood. (Hanne_hc@hotmail.com)

We are also planning a donation program aimed at more frequent rotation of university dogs, so next year will be very exciting :)

But for now I just want to wish everyone the absolute best for Christmas and New Year and Good Luck with exams to all students!

Wet Dog

Don Oscar was so shy and bashful when he first arrived to us. He had previously not encountered much human contact, having lived in the garden of an empty house with his mother and sister and surviving on scraps offered bt the neighbours. When someone did move into the house the dog catcher was contacted, but fortunately for Oscar the dog-catcher wasn`t getting payed so he didn`t want to come to collect the 3 dogs for euthanasia. Howeve, after Oscars sister, Dorothy, was hit by a car, his mother,Alice, was taken in for neutering by a local animal welfare organisation and Oscar was left to his own devices in the garden. Budadogs decided to take him on and he arrived with Tapp and Sally last week. He was frightened but quickly trusted us. After a fosterhome didn`t work out we decided he should not change his enviroment again so he remains in fostering with us: Myself (Anouska), Caroline and, of course, the Almighty Ben :)

Don Oscar

Tapp, Sally and Don Oscar have arrived to Budadogs HQ. Don Oscar, who we were told was a girl, was so frightened and had never been indoors but after a night on the sofa he has truly come into his own. He is a 6 month old mix, aprox 6 kg`s. Tapp is a happy, lively, outgoing boy, aprox 5 kg, he is Tilly`s son. Sally is a delight beyond comparison! A truly intelligent, soulful and loving girl who`s only aim is to please, love and be loved in return. She is very likely a Mudi mix and she is 1 year old.

We are looking for fosterhomes for these tender souls as they will not benefit from a kennel enviroment at such an impressionable time in their lives. Hi everyone :)

I have recieved quite alot of questions regarding bloodtesting after we started the donor program at the university clinic using Budadogs as blood-donors.

I would just like to stress the importance of testing your dog regularly for the diseases endemic to Hungary which do not exist in Norway (I do not know what diseases apply to other countries). When deciding what to routine-test our dogs for I talked to the head of int.med. and also the parasitology department to map out which diseases have a high occurence in Hungary and lack of in Norway. Based on this we routine test all our dogs for Borrelia, Babesia and Dirofilaria. Borrelia exists in Norway, - Babesia and Dirofilaria do not. Therefore I would like to stress the importance of testing your dogs regularly for these diseases and treating preventatively as long as your dog is in Hungary.

Babesia is tick-borne, Dirofilaria by mosquito`s. Thankfully the occurence of D.immitis is rare but D.repens is endemic to this region (apparantly they don`t have much of the mosquito vector for D.immitis.. yet). It is hard to get rid of (if at all possible) and can take a year or more. Although it does not have much clinical consequence for a dogs life to live with D.repens it is still important to test your dog for it and take the right steps should it turn out to be positive. We do not bring positive dogs to Norway. All in all we have had 5 dogs with positive tests. These are undergoing treatment and will be rehomed to Hungary, unless a bloodtest shows otherwise.

If you want to test your dog for Babesia and Dirofilaria/Microfilaria specifically you can do this at recsei vet clinic for 5000ft.

Christmas doggie?

A terribly good deed to do this christmas is to let a dog into your warm apartment for the holidays. Although a merry time for us, Christmas is often a traumatic time for doggies. Alot of our dogs can withstand kenneling without much ado, but some would really benefit from a home-away-from-home during fostermums break. These are the puppies and old and sick dogs. If you would like to look after a dog during the season in Budapest then please don`t hesitate with contacting us. 50 dogs is our magic number for the holidays, so as you understand there is more than enough to choose from...

Rupert, our beagle that belonged to the University Surgery Department was one of 4 beagles that are used for surgery research (PhD). Unfortunately when time came to alternate the dogs the other 3 were euthanised because they were not thought to be able to function in a family enviroment. Rupert, however, was spared and we were asked whether we could take him, or he too would be put to sleep. Thankfully Rebecca offered to foster Rupert almost immediately and he is thriving beyond expecation in his fosterhome! The life at university is not one that any dog really should have to go through, living in metal kennels 24/7, sitting in their own urine and faeces. It seems, though, that Rupert has put this all behind him :)

This evening Caroline is collecting 2 dogs from kennels who are going into new fosterhomes which are: Eddie, Sylvester and Lucas :)

Also 3 new dogs are arriving tonight, long awaited Bobby and Sally and a 3rd dog we recieved an email about yesterday telling us about a small and old dachshound mix male who his owner had tried to kill by hanging him by his collar to a fence. Because of his small size he did not suffocate and was rescued by an elderly lady. We have named him Tim(photo).
Exactly how old Tim is, we do not know but we do know his eyes are poorly. He will be given veterinary care immediately.

Dogs in need of fostering for the cold winter months

Tommy`s fostermum didn`t want to foster him any longer so we are looking for a new hangout for this little guy. He is aprox 5 years old, small and likes his creature comforts :) Accordingly, kennels do not bode well for him.

Kaja is a 5 month old puppy, most likely Daisy`s daughter. She has been in fostering where she has lived much outside and left to her own devices, meaning she has taken it upon herself to rearrange the garden somewhat. As a result she could not stay and is being kept at kennels but this is not ideal for a girl of her age so we really want to find her a nice fosterhome. She is a big puppy and will most likely grow into a big girl :)

Sylvester is a male sheperd mix, aprox 2 years old. Sylvester was found by our friends in Heves by the side of the road after having been hit by a car and he could not move. As a result of his accident he has a paralysed nerve in his forelimb which means he walks with a limp. He is still happy and loves to run and play, but should not go for the longest hikes quite obviously :)

Speedy has been with us for about a month now. She was adopted by a medicine student who quickly changed his mind unfortunately, after realising the effort it entails to own a dog. Abit of a mistake on my part I must admit, but one lives and learns. Speedy is from Heves where she was going to be put to sleep because her owner had died and we agreed to take her. She is currently in kennels but we sorely want her into fostering. Speedy is a small husky-like girl. She is energetic and outgoing and can be a little selective with female dogs due to prior lack of socialization. She had a lovely fosterhome but unfortunately could not stay there because she did not get on with the fosterparents friends female dog. Apparantly it is an oddity that she misliked this female in particular as she was getting on well with all other dogs and rehabilitating well. Speedy is a funny girl with lots of quirks and she is also extremely intelligent. She is aprox 2-4 years old.

Lucas (more info coming :) just need to upload his photo`s) He is a small black male mix, wire haired. Young aprox 8 months old. Has been kept in the stables at Ullò and we were asked to take him. Apparantly dogs are left at Ullò all the time because people know it`s a veterinary clinic.

Rupert 3 year old Beagle who has been used for Surgery research at the university small animal clinic. He is a sweet, energetic boy who has been caged for so long it`s painful to think about. I will update his details and photo as soon as possible. He is a pure bred beagle male, castrated and if anyone deserves a second chance, it`s him!

Sweet Tobias needs a fosterhome

Poor Tobias came to us last week from Heves. His fur was so tangled and riddeled with faeces and urine, it was causing him great pain and he needed to be completely sedated for it to be removed.

Tobias is a sweet, soulful and careful boy in desperate need of Love and we really want to get him into a secure home enviroment as soon as possible. He is a Puli mix, medium size and aprox 2 years old. If you are interested in fostering him please let us know! He really does not enjoy the kennel enviroment....

Two new puppies arrived into our care today, Siblings Finbeck and Fia. The pups are 6-7 weeks old, fluffy dachshound/spaniel mixes. They are unbelievably adorable, sweet and outgoing babies with a very original look! :) Currently they are being kept in an outdoor kennel but it is too cold for them and so we really hope someone can take them into fostering a.s.a.p! Caroline has taken them to the vet now for vaccines and antiparasitic treatment as they are typically distended with worms and the soft fluffy fur hides very thin little bodies. Finbeck is the male, lighter colour, Fia is the smaller, darker female. Both are outgoing and balanced babies :)

Last week we were hit with very dire news that our poor little Pete (also known as "Conan" after a somewhat malfunctioning "He-Man"incident ;) had a carcinoma. Today, however, we were given the fantastic news by brave fostermum Runa that he is infact NOT ill with cancer but rather had an inflammatory reaction to his vaccines!! (nice biopsy work). Way to go Conan! Or is it He-Man afterall?

Hats off to Louise for fostering this unimaginable trio! If ever there was a prize for "most fantastic fostermum" there would be no contest :) From left to right Russel, Andrè and Konrad (aka Archie) all have their crosses to bear. Russel was so frightened upon arrival, his answer to a single touch was to lay on his back and relieve himself. Andrè is most likely a hit-and-run case and has undergone extensive surgery to his stifle and Archie is set to undergo HD operations very soon, yet still finds it in him to function as Russel`s private rehabilitator. Thanks Louise! You`re doing an amazing job that`s worth its weight in gold!

Cesar...A Puggle apart!

In all the Puggle chaos one little man stands out from the crowd, our beautiful Volpino Italiano pup Cesar. Also smuggeled into Norway by Hungarian dog trafficers, Cesar was sold to owners who realised later that he was in fact an illegal import. Cesar was handed over to the authorities and transported back to Budapest with his 5 little buddies. He is now in the caring foster-arms of norwegian vet student Maud and her two madams Chiquita and Embla. Cesar is also for adoption. Cesar will undergo all the necessary healthtesting for legal transport to Norway and will be ready for travel in the Spring.

Arrival of The Puggles!!

After alot of arrangments and hard work Lily, editor of "Ditt Dyr" magasine arrived yesterday morning with 6 of the 40 puppies smuggeled into Norway illegally by Hungarians, henceforth "The Puggles". It is a desperate situation that happens all too often and the animals, per usual, become the victims. Several dogs were discovered and the authorities claimed understandably that the only option was euthanasia due to the strict control of Rabies. Some of the dogs will be kept in a 5 month quaranteen in Norway however the Puggles were deemed too young for such a fate and thus had few options other than Euthanasia until Lily contacted me regarding them and whether or not something could be done. And as they say: Where there`s a will, there`s a way.

Two of the pups had actually been sold to owners in Norway and have been brought back to Budapest and into our care in order to enter Norway "afresh" and in a legal and proper fashion. These are 4 month old "Leif" and 3 month old "Wilma". Wilma`s mum Maren travelled down to BP with her and both dogs can be handed back over to their initial owners as "Budadogs". Additionally there are the 3 puggeles whom we named "Puggle" (of course), "Dina" and "Theodor". 6th man aboard is a beautiful Volpino Italiano boy quite apropriately named "Cesar". He is a rare breed, even in his country of origin, and doesn`t he know it!

The pups arrived on two separate flights landing at 10am and noon. Our Vet Viktor was kind enough to accompany us to the airport to ensure that the pups were in good health and had withstood the travel ok. After that we took them home. The pups are incredibly outgoing, secure and bursting with confidence which I am so happy to see!

Lily is writing an article about the journey of the smuggled Puggles and also about Budadogs so to that occasion we managed to organize a meet with fostermums/dogs and adopted dogs/mums in city park for a photo-shoot. (Photographer Jon travelled with Lily from Norway). It was great to see som many of the dogs gathered in one place and we had some lovely autumn sunshine to top it off! It truly warmed my heart!

In the early evening we took the Puggles to Recsei vet clinic and Viktor gave them a thorough check up. All dogs were given an overhaul and we went through their passports and vaccination records. Some of the pups show brachycephalic symptoms which is typical for the breed, and we will be x-raying Leifs trachea because his sudden increase in weight has put pressure on his airways making him stereotypically "pug-cough" upon excitement.

We completed our hectic day with a meal at Karma. Remaining Puggles are now resting peacefully in our apartment. I am so happy that we could help these dogs. Bred and sold for money, we cannot imagine the conditions they come from and the state or situation of their parents. I really hope that people make an effort to buy dogs from trustworthy, knowledgable breeders who bring dogs into this world for other reasons than financial gain and that the focus put on these puppies will make people understand the importance of proper breeding and paperwork. Breeds such as Pug`s are already in a vulnerable position physiologically, which makes it all the more important to consider carefully where you acquire your dog from so that the dog you do purchase has the best possible oportunity to thrive and live a healthy and comfortable life.

As far as the pups are concerned, Cesar has gone into fostering with 3rd year vet.student Maud.
Leif`s mum in Norway has a friend who studies here so she will be looking after him for the duration of his stay.
Wilma is staying with Caroline and I until Inger Elisabeth returns to foster her next week.
Puggle, our little Rock STAR and only black colored Pug in the bunch has already captured the heart of a Hungarian student.
Leader-of-the-pack Theodor will be going to vet.student Nina later on in the week and dainty-Dina has stolen my brother Nicky`s heart for the time being.

The dogs are being bloodtested for relevant diseases endemic to Hungary, as are all Budadogs. They will go through the rabies program for legal import to Norway and will be set to return back early Spring. Until then they will hang out in their motherland and have a sufficiently good time at that, I`m sure. :)

Two "Little Women" were rehomed today, Lisa and Martha. Lisa was advertised in Norway last week with a huge amount of responses and will be travelling to her lovely new mum on thursday with Eve. Her photo`s charmed over 30 responses and having to choose was far from easy. We finally made a decision and she has been rehomed to Telemark surrounded by nature and a mum who works from home which is perfect for our little Fairy :)

Baby Martha went on a "date" with her potential new mum and dad today (veterinary student and previous fosterparent) and she obviously charmed them because they have decideded to adopt her:)

Happy ending all round for Lisa after a long stay at Illatos and Martha who was found frighteningly close to death at the side of the motorway near Heves. Now safe... and soon to be Norwegian little women :))

Two new dogs

Today we have taken on two new dogs. I recieved an email from our friend in Heves.

One dog has been living in a field and a 70 year old woman has been feeding him regularly. However now that it is getting colder his condition is deteriorating and she thought of no other alternative than to call the dog catcher to have him put to sleep. I told them we would take him.

The second dog is an older large male belonging to an old woman. He has been living outdoors and wandering the neighbourhood but the neighbours have threatened to kill him, so the old lady has now tied him to the door handle. She cannot afford to feed herself, let alone the dog so I also agreed to take him on.

Both dogs will be arriving to us in a weeks time. I will post photo`s once I get them.

Obviously, we need all the help we can get. To open your warm home and heart to a fosterdog is the best way to help so anyone interested, please don`t hesitate to contact us.... So many dogs will be freezing to death again this winter....

As of Friday this week Kaja will be needing a new fostermum. She is one of our dogs rescued from the military camp in Heves and is Daisy`s aprox 4 month old daughter. Kaja will grow to be be a big girl, is bright and intelligent :) She loves other dogs so a fosterhome with other dogs is prefect.

Boxer-baby`s sister Bella (aka "Tank") was adopted to Kasper`s fostermum the same day we got her. The puppies are 6 weeks old and have been handreared since the age of 2 weeks due to their mothers mastitis. Tank weighs in at a solid 5.5 kg`s! Not a bad weight for a 6 week old body-builder who could easily be mistaken for a St.Bernhard puppy!
The photo is of her first day in her new home, spreading the love and giving fosterbrother Kasper a good overhall proving that she soon enough will match him in strength :)

Bobby and Sally will be arriving soon to Budadogs and both dogs will need fostering :) They are young dogs, around 1 year old. Bobby was going to be put down because he is not aggressive or guarding and just too happy for the owner (who wanted a guard-dog) and Sally had a litter which made her owner want to take a bat to her and her babies head. She was shy and kept in horrific conditions but is coming out of her shell. Anyone interested in fostering one of these or the other 4 that need fostering, just let us know :) All pooches are really sweet dogs!

Yesterday Dexi and Buster went into fosterhomes which we are really happy about. Dexi sorely needed someone to give him the attention he so dearly deserves.

Additionally Speedy is still for rehoming due to her adopter changing their mind. She is also in need of fostering because she wasn`t getting no with fostermums friends fosterdog, Ellie. It`s apparantly odd because Ellie (Elvira) seems to be the only dog she really doesn`t like. Obviously also very unfortunate because that means she needs a new fosterhome.

Her owner died and family wanted to put her to sleep so called the dog catcher. Has lived a somewhat sheltered life in a garden. She was briefly considered adopted by a med. student but he changed his mind. She was in fostering but doesn`t like fostermums friends fosterdog which was a shame. She has gone out to kennels now but was getting on really well in fostering so I hope someone wants to take her :) She`s a funny little girl with lots of personality.

Boxer-babies

2 days ago I was contaced by a vet at the uni clinic regarding 3 boxer-mix puppies that needed rehoming. Two are rehomed and one remains "Boxer-baby" (for now) is in fostering. Babies are only 6 weeks old and were separated from mum at 2 weeks due to a heavy mastitis that left her in hospital for 3 weeks. Mums a boxer, dads a golden retriever. They were only 3 in the litter, all are fat and happy. Boxer-baby is the only one left for adoption:)

Living up to her name, Speedy has managed to set a record for fastest dog out of fostering and into a new home. (She went into fostering on saturday). Speedy has been adopted by a 3rd year medicine student and handover is today. We wish the lovely girl and her new dad all the best!

Rest in peace sweet Leah

Last night Leah died a sad, unecessary death. She had complications after a sterilisation and had to be operated again. Her organs had adhered to eachother and there was a 50% chance of it reocurring. However she was getting on very well, eating, drinking and even playing abit. Then 4 days post.op. her wound reopened and there was nothing we could do...

Sometimes it`s all you can do not to blame yourself or the people around you. Everyone tries so hard and still it`s pointless. Leah was sterilised due to pregnancy before she came to us, which is what we do. It is season for pregnant females it seems. She came into fostering and the poor girls were distraught she didnt urinate for 4 days. Vet did ultrasound and thought maybe her urinary tract was ligated, her bladder was so full. They reopened her and found her bladder attached to her intestines and everything attached to everything else. Post.op she was doing so well and now this. Don`t ask me how, don`t ask me why. Vet did an autopsy and everything looked to be going well... The soft, poor baby was obviously not meant for this world. Rest in peace sweet Leah.. I`m so deeply sorry we failed you...

Russel went missing yesterday and after hours of searching and the girls handing out flyers there was nothing left to do but wait for him to show up and hope that someone found it in their heart to take the poor boy in. Thankfully someone did. An old lady had seen him lying under a car last night and she had also seen one of our flyers. She told a passer by about the dog and he coaxed him out and took him home. This morning he rang his veterinarian who again contacted our vet Viktor (Viktor had called in an S.O.S to the Budapest clinics informing them there was a lost dog) and Russel was back safe and sound this afternoone!

If anyone is interested in leash-handling-courses Louise will be offering them on a voluntary basis at uni. (private sessions can also be arranged ;p)

Lilly`s fosterdad from medicine found a heavily pregnant female during the "crap-on-the-street" weekend. She was in a terrible condition and left wandering helplessly amongst the garbage. Today she was taken to Viktor`s for a hysterectomy and removal of the 8 puppies. She has gone home with her temporary fosterdad and Lilly for recovery. Our new addition has been named Lucy :)She will be looking for a new fosterhome!
